Tour Review:
5690 put in a great effort on the Saturday with a fantastic run from Gordon Hodgson who drove from Carlisle, the sound on Beattock was hellfire. Then on the Saturday with 61994,it all started quite sedately with a steady run to Craigendoran where the fireworks started! Some great crewing (both Driving and Firing) on this run and some brilliant handling from Peter Walker on the controls saw us keep time and absolutely belt over County March Summit! Then the K1 came on at FW and i sat back and enjoyed the scenery, took some fots and then generally enjoyed the run, seeing as though at this point we were at the back i expected some peace and quiet so i was most disgusted to hear the engine making an awful amount of noise on the climb to Beasdale bank! I had the K1 down as a noisy engine but christ what a brilliant noise!! The return run was equally as thrashy with a spirited run towards Glenfinnan, some more brilliant driving and firing ensured we made the summit with no great fuss,we arrived back into Fort Bill more or less on time before steadily heading to the hotel for a lovely meal a drink and a great laugh (Garlic Bread Ciabatta or w/e its called,Gammon,2 Eggs,Chips,Peas,Tomato,Mushroom and a pint of Tennants all thrown in!)
It was nice to have a lesuirely morning on the Sunday, another great breakfast with me throwing Milk on the carpet! Then the real fun began, the weather was dismal and we set off in fine style, conquering bank after bank until the real challenge up Glen Douglas bank faced us from Arrochar and Tarbet, the conditions actually deteriated before we started the climb and in heavy rain Driver Walker made a thunderous attack at the foot of the climb on the short downhill section out of A+T station, then speed gradually began to drop, the odd slip in the very heavily treelined section (huge bushes scraping the side of the train in places) saw speed drop further and we were down to around 10mph but Peter, the crew and the K4 obviously wouldn't let a little rain and leafall stop them!! 61994 kept on plodding away on triumphantly made the summit at a good speed!
The Jub then came back on and an awesome ascent was made of Beattock before the booked stop at Beattock summit loop saw driver Hodgson shut off power,we maintained 62mph until this point. At Carlisle Albert Seymour took over for a solid run over Shap before descending towards Carnforth where the real excitement began when 47760 came on the front ;)
A huge thanks to Nigel, all stewards (and stewardesses :D ),WCRC,NR and Scotrail for a great tour and a huge congrats is due for making it so smooth and succesful, barely any late running (was 10 mins about as late as we got all weekend?) and actually arriving early back into Preston proved just how great it was!
Now need to book GB3 and i hope you consider running this next year Nigel!
Hope you like the review (i reckon some will have better write up's) and i have pics and over an hours worth of vid (ear defenders ready?)
Cheers,
Mark

 | 18th Aug 2009 | The Great Eastern Mainline (26 images)
The Great Eastern is one of Britain's most interesting mainlines and is one where loco haulage on express trains still rules supreme, albeit in the hands of Electric Class 90 locos. To add interest there is a wide variety of liveries on show as well as many different freight workings and locos. Another interesting point in the summer is the well known 'Yarmouth Drags' these are NXEA services worked between Norwich and Great Yarmouth by DRS Class 47's,on this occasion 47832 'Solway Princess'. Many different classes can be seen on the Great Eastern Mainline including:47,66,82(DVT),86,90,156,158,170 and 360

 | 5th Aug 2009 | The Welsh Mountaineer (23 images)
These photos were taken on RTC's 'Welsh Mountaineer' tour hauled by 45231 'Sherwood Forester' from Preston-Blanau Ffestiniog and return. The tour ran both ways via:Preston-Warrington-Frodsham-Chester-Llandudno Junction-Blanau.
This tour involved a dramatic climb on the Blanau line, one which has crippled trains in the past. 45231 made it literally to the top before it came to grief in a very narrow rocky tunnel, this was caused by a slip on the wet rails inside the tunnel. Fortunately a quick decision was made to split the train and 45231+load 5 made a storming ascent of the bank. This involved some awesome driving from Bill Andrews and some heroic crewing in general.

This tour started at Clapham Junction and ran to Weymouth before returning to London Waterloo along the fast lines from Basingstoke.

Unfortunately, even though Bob Meanley and his crew had worked to fix Edgcumbe succesfully it couldn't work the train back so in the end 47773 carried on to Solihull and ultimately Tyseley.

The train made a fantastic ascent of the banks until Ludlow, where a problem was found with the Air pump. Thanks to the stirling efforts of the support crew the loco managed to restart the train and got as far almost as Church Stretton before coming to a halt 3 times to build steam, there was another problem with the air pump, but Nunney managed to fight on all the way to Shrewsbury here 67028 took over for the run to Bristol where 67025 took back over for the run to Paddington. Well done to Andy and all at PTR for the decisions that were made,Paul Burns who drove brilliantly to Magor and then for a great effort to empty the tender between there and Shrewsbury,Fred Lewis, for his great firing and stirling driving on the climbs over the WM and Tommy who helped as with his great experience as Inspector. Well done also to Geoff Ewans who drove 67028 and was scheduled to drive 5029 on the return.

 | 20th Nov 2008 to 20th Oct 2008 | Almark-OO Gauge layout (49 images)
These are a set of photos from the layout me and my dad set up 10 years ago.
Building:
I wanted a trainset as a child, christmas 1998 came and i got my wish,it was very simple,a board on the floor in the living room, with a control and 1 saddle tank called "Smokey Joe". From 1999 though my dad decided that there simply wasn't any room to keep the board on the floor where it was,so we gradually moved it upstairs. Firstly we got some wood, built some legs and attached the table. Then my dad laid the track,it consists of a two track mainline with fully functional Steam and diesel depots in the middle,as well as a coal yard. Now came the hard part and my dad set about wiring underneath the layout. This took a while but after minor problems the wiring was finally done, complete with 4 working colourlight signals. Now all remained was the scenery. Firstly the track at the front (Sea front) was ballasted, whilst the rest was laid on foam ballast. Once the track and ballasting was complete he bought plenty of scenery items and managed to brilliantly bring the layout to life with some awsome modelling and the addition of figures to the village and sheds. Now came the gradual purchase of locos.
Operation:
So we started out with only a small pool of locos, these consisted of my dad's old triang models,a black princess and a STD4MT tank. Gradually we purchased more including A4's,V2's,Kings,Castles etc until we got to the stage we are at today. As you can see in these photos there are a varity of locos on show, they include: Vi Trains customised Class 37 (To my beast) 37427 "Bont 'y Bermo" in its current EW&S livery. Also on the layout on the outer track is customised A3 no 60091 "Captain Cuttle". In the diesel TMD (Almark TMD,more on the name later) we have 2 BR Green Deltics: D9016 "Gordon Highlander" and D9001 "St Paddy",we also have D9009 "Alycidon",but that is boxed,2 BR Green Class 25's nos: D7596 and D5206,1 class 08 shunter in Railfreight Grey livery no 08661"Europa",1 Class 03 shunter no 03382 in BR blue livery and one class 06 shunter in Civil Engineers livery no 06008,and a Stratford breakdown train. On the steam MPD we have: 14XX class no1466,Castle Class 5042 "Winchester Castle",Peppercorn A1 Class loco 60158 "Aberdonian" and Patriot class loco 45515 "Caernarvon".
The Name:
As those of you on UKTS will know,my name on there is almark, this is also the name of our beloved layout, the name was an idea i had in 2000 when we were wondering what to call it,we came up with the name using our names, his is Alan, been shortened to al and my name Mark, thus giving us the name Almark. This also gave the name to:Almark station,Almark TMD,Almark MPD,Almark Level crossing and Almark Ferry Halt.
Hope you like viewing our layout, and that it inspires you to do it yourself, after all we had barely any experience before this. I hope to upload some videos to my youtube account eventually.
Cheers,
Mark and Alan

 | 29th May 2008 | Trains at Dawlish Warren (17 images)
Here are some photos taken on an unfortunatley rainy evening in May. They show a wide variety of workings passing through Dawlish Warren and Cockwood including 2 Freights. The first is a Freightliner working to Newton Abbot, first we see it heading south, then back to Exeter for fuel (?) It is then seen again heading back towards Newton Abbot awaiting in Dawlish Warren loop for a XC train to pass. The other freight seen was a scrap train clagging past Cockwood Harbour.

Next i moved on to Colton Junction where i saw plenty more variety in both passenger and freight. Enjoy!

 | 19th May 2008 | Trains at Dawlish May 2008 (21 images)
Here is a selection of photos taken at Dawlish and in the surrounding area on May 6th 2008,the first location is the path that winds its way up the cliff at the south end of Dawlish (above Kennaway Tunnel). The second location is a crossing on the Dawlish Warren road, it is approximatley 1/4 mile east of Cockwood Harbour and is a beautiful spot to see the trains up close. The best shot at this location facing Plymouth is on the road side on a summers night as the sun will shine directly onto the front and side of approaching trains. The riverside is best in the morning and early afternoon. The 3rd and final location is the road from Starcross to Powderham if coming from the south and from the north the road that leads from the A379 to the left. There are some parking spaces near the church and to get to the crossing you need to walk along the path that leads to the left of the road, where it bends right at the Starcross Yacht Club (Private Parking). Follow the path then cross the crossing. This location allows fantastic shots in either direction at most times of day with the sun been at a good angle.

 | 19th May 2008 | Yorkshire Railways 19th May 2008 (20 images)
Here are some photos i have taken on my day off today of various locations around Yorkshire. Firstly we see various workings passing Burn,nr Eggborough PS. Unfortunatley the normal location is unavailable at the moment because someone decided to lay a pipeline!! So don't go to the bridge off the A19! Next we see Kellingly Colliery, one of the few pits still working. Next i went to Knottingley, here i stood in a factory car park and managed to get a shot of EWS Class 37 no.37670 which is currently undergoing a B exam at Knottingley depot. I then moved onto the station and saw a light engine move and a couple of freights, all in all not a bad afternoons spotting really!

 | 15th Apr 2008 to 16th Apr 2008 | The North Briton Days 4 and 5 (58 images)
Here are more photos from the North Briton Days 4 and 5. On Day 4 Tuesday 15th April the train ran with No.9 and 45407 back from Inverness to Glasgow via Perth where the Black Five was removed. The train then continued via Stirling into Glasgow Arriving with No.9 at the head of the train. On the final day Wednesday 16th April the train ran steam hauled back from Glasgow to Peterborough where Royal Class 67 67005 took over for the run to KX. The Duke set out very early morning from Glasgow Central and arrived at York in the early afternoon. Here Bittern took over for the run back down to Peterborough.
|
 | 14th Apr 2008 | The North Briton Day 3 of 5 (42 images)
Here are some photos from the optional extra trip which ran to Kyle of Localsh on Monday 14th April. The train set out on time from Inverness at 06:25 hauled by 45407. First we set out for Achnasheen where water was taken but not before a storming climb to Raven's Rock was made. After the water stop the train continued all the way to the waters edge at Kyle, where 4 hours were spent. On the return the loco was facing tender first which posed major problems later in the trip.As the train climbed towards the summit of the 1in50 Luib Bank it encountered a Greaser on reverse curves causing it to lose its momentum. It managed to make it to the next bend before another major loss of momentum caused the train to stall. Many attempts were made to start the train but 8 coaches including a Kitchen car and Generator car proved to be too much for the Black Five so the rear 2 coaches were split from the train (Gen' Coach and Coach A) Passengers from coach A had to walk to the front of the train whilst it carried on making the climb and then rolling the rest of the 8 miles to Achnasheen for the water stop. This caused a heavy delay however as the loco still had to run light back to luib to collect the two coaches. This resulted in a 3 hour delay departing Achnasheen. Coaches from Inverness were sent to Garve to collect passengers who did not want to face the climb of Raven's Rock which it made in fine style! (All those diners weighing the train down!) The train managed to get back into Inverness Just less than 3 hours late at 21:30! However this was a journey to remember!
|
 | 13th Apr 2008 | The North Briton Day 2 of 5 (35 images)
Here are some photos from the second day of the North Briton. On Sunday 13th April the train ran steam hauled behind EX LNER A4 4-6-2 No.60009 "Union Of South Africa" from Edingburgh Waverley-Dundee where EX LMS Black 5 4-6-0 No. 45407 the "Lancashire Fusilier" was added to the train and it ran in top and tail formation to Perth. At Perth 45407 went into the main concourse to take water whilst 60009 stayed on the train. However there was a problem with the Hydrant not giving enough pressure meaning no.9 had to go into the station along with 45407. This made for a fantastic photo shoot with the two engines been posed side by side for a few seconds meaning a 1960's shot was possible! After this the train carried on albeit late to Inverness, stopping to take water at Aviemore en route.
|
 | 12th Apr 2008 | The North Briton Day 1 Of 5 (37 images)
Here are photos from the First day of the Rail-Holiday the "North Briton". |
 | 5th Apr 2008 | The Golden Arrow (50 images)
Here are some photos from the next to last train ever to visit Folkestone Harbour. It was hauled by 34067 Tangmere from Willesden SW Sidings-Folkestone Harbour-Ashford, and the diesel hauled the other legs from Nottingham-Willesden, Ashford-Nottingham. Steam unfortunatley had to be removed from the train at Ashford as the train was running two hours late due to signalling problems near Clapham junction when a cable caught fire. This meant the train never went via Canterbury and the coast meaning a lot of time was gained back and on time arrival back into Nottingham was acheived. This was vital as had the train have been late it would have been stopped due to an engineering blockade at Nottingham. If this is the last train to visit Folkestone it went out in fine style, just a pity it looks in such a state. Oh well i'm sure the bulldozers will make a fine sight!
